General String                        Searches for the string, regardless of how it is used. 

Variable/Function Use           Searches only for the string used as a variable or as a function parameter. 

Function Definition                Searches only for the string in a function definition. It does not find calls to the function. 

Macro Definition                     Searches only for the string in a macro definition. It does not find calls to the macro. 

Variable Definition                 Searches for the string in a variable definition. It does not find uses of the variable. 

Pointer Variable Definition   Searches for the string in a pointer variable definition. It does not find uses of the pointer variable, nor any places where the variable is defined but not as a pointer. 

Typedef Definition                 Searches only for a string of the type defined.
